Southport Bach Choir is honoured to have been invited to participate in the 2027 BachFest in Leipzig, the German city in which JS Bach spent much of his life.

We will be performing two Bach cantatas and two unaccompanied English anthems on Wednesday 16th June at the Paul Gerhardt church in Leipzig.

BachFest is truly international, drawing audiences and superstar performers from around the world, including Canadian Bach keyboard specialist Angela Hewitt, Collegium Vocale Gent with director Philippe Herreweghe, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra directed by Ton Koopman.

Southport Bach Choir music director Marc Murray said “We are delighted to be asked to perform, and to act as music ambassadors for Southport during the event. It’s a great privilege to be invited for a second time following our visit in 2024, and we are looking forward to showing the world the quality of music making in Southport.”

Works we will perform are:

  • JS Bach: Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein (BWV 128)

  • JS Bach: Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren (BWV 154)

  • John Stainer: God so loved the world (from The Crucifixion)

  • Anon: Rejoice in the Lord alway (16th century anthem)

For the Bach cantatas we will be joined by soloists Annekathrin Laabs (alto), Georg Poplutz (tenor) and Matthias Helm (bass), and accompanied by Leipzig-based orchestra Collegium Lipsiensis.
